| A venerable brand revived Millbrook Custom Cabinetry is back in business as production is resumed Times Union • October 15, 2010 by Eric Anderson ![]() A long-time dealer has revived the Millbrook Custom Cabinetry name, just over 11 months after the company's Nassau plant abruptly shut down. Frank Sanderson, who has sold Millbrook products for 42 years, has patented and trademarked the name, and resumed production at a state-of-the-art factory operated by Solid Surface Craftsman Inc. on Freeman's Bridge Road in Glenville. Millbrook shut its plant in November last year as it ran into financial difficulties. Later that month, it filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation in Albany. At the time, Sanderson, who operates Millbrook Custom Kitchens in North Greenbush and Kitchen Buyers Outlet in Clifton Park, hoped Millbrook would find investors to allow it to reopen. He himself had been a longtime investor. But that didn't happen. So Sanderson acted, with the Glenville plant producing cabinets for his pending orders. It has since added eight former Millbrook employees, including the former production manager and the former president, said Alan Boulant, who owns Solid Surface Craftsman. Sanderson has made improvements on the design -- a deeper cabinet to accommodate the larger dinner plates that are becoming more common -- while maintaining the quality and innovative features that characterized Millbrook's products. The affiliated showrooms, which include Keeler Concepts by Design in Chatham as well as the Clifton Park and North Greenbush locations, may soon be joined by showrooms in Malta and Saratoga Springs. Sanderson said five designers have been added to the retail locations. "We're in the higher end of the market," he said during an interview Thursday afternoon. He estimates he's installed more than 6,000 kitchens in his career. Boulant, meanwhile, said he's excited by the endeavour, which he expects to boost his business. "Our company before Millbrook was an $8 million to $9 million company," Boulant said. With Millbrook, "our company could go to $14 million to $15 million" in wholesale revenues annually. The plant, which also makes cabinets under the Christopher Millwork name, as well as countertops, employs 78 people. (return to top of page) |
